Project-Based AI Curriculum for Schools

A project-based AI curriculum teaches AI through building: students design, prototype, test, and present a real product, and learn AI concepts as the project demands them. That is the method behind every Digital Alchemy school pilot, because students remember what they shipped and can prove what they learned by showing it.

Taught by Desi Baker (Desmond Baker Jr), a Google Gemini Certified Educator who has taught AI through the Chicago Housing Authority and spoken at AI Tinkerers.

Who this is for

  • Innovation directors and magnet or STEM program leaders
  • Principals who have watched worksheet-based tech units fall flat
  • Teachers who want a unit students ask to continue

What students walk away with

  • Concepts anchored to a product: data, bias, and verification show up as real project problems
  • Iteration as a habit: test, get feedback, revise, present
  • Public evidence of learning: a showcase, not just a grade
  • Teamwork and communication practiced on a deadline

The build loop

  • Design: pick a real problem, plan the product, name the audience
  • Prototype: build the first working version with AI as a partner
  • Test: put it in front of users, find what breaks, check AI output
  • Present: ship the final version and explain the choices

Where the AI literacy lives

Literacy is not a separate week of definitions. When a student's product gives a wrong answer, that is the lesson on hallucination. When its images all look the same, that is the lesson on bias in training data. The project makes the concepts necessary, and the teacher makes them explicit.

Assessment that matches the method

Students are assessed on process and product together: a shared rubric covering research, verification, craft, iteration, and presentation. Schools receive attendance, completion, and rubric summaries as part of the pilot evaluation.

Questions schools ask

How is this different from regular project-based learning?

The projects are built with AI tools, so AI literacy, verification, authorship, and responsible use are assessed as part of the project, not taught beside it.

What do students build?

Websites, simple apps, games, media, and community tools. The brief fits the host subject and grade band, and every product has a real audience at the showcase.

Can our own teachers run this after the pilot?

That is the design. Teacher training runs through the pilot, and the evaluation summary includes what your staff needs to run the next round with lighter support.
