AI Literacy Curriculum for High School

Digital Alchemy's AI literacy curriculum for high school teaches students to understand AI, use it well, question it, and build with it, in that order. It runs as a 9-week pilot inside an existing class or elective, and every student finishes with a real digital product in their portfolio. Free curricula teach the ideas. This program adds the instructor, the training, and the build.

Taught by Desi Baker (Desmond Baker Jr), a Google Gemini Certified Educator who has taught AI through the Chicago Housing Authority and spoken at AI Tinkerers.

Who this is for

  • High school principals adding an AI elective or unit
  • Department chairs weaving AI literacy into English, social studies, business, art, or computer science
  • Counselors and college-and-career staff who want portfolio proof for students

What students walk away with

  • Students explain how AI systems work, in plain language
  • Students verify AI output and spot bias, errors, and made-up answers
  • Students follow clear authorship and disclosure rules for AI help
  • Every student designs, builds, tests, and presents a digital product

The arc: literacy first, then creation

  • Weeks 1 to 3: how AI works, where it fails, bias, privacy, and verification
  • Weeks 4 to 6: using AI as a research and drafting partner, with disclosure rules
  • Weeks 7 to 9: design, prototype, test, and present a real product

Why not just use a free curriculum?

Code.org, Day of AI, and Common Sense Media publish good free material, and we say so on our main curriculum page. What they do not include is an instructor in your classroom, training for your teachers, or a guided build with a public showcase at the end. Schools that have the staff time run free material well. Schools that do not, run a pilot.

Standards alignment

The curriculum supports alignment with ISTE standards and the AI4K12 big ideas, and can be mapped to CSTA concepts on request. Digital citizenship and responsible use are woven through every week, not added as a single lesson.

Questions schools ask

Which classes can this run inside?

Computer science, business, media, English, and advisory or elective blocks all work. The build project adapts to the host subject.

Do students need devices?

A Chromebook or laptop per student is enough. All tools are browser-based and school-approved before the pilot starts.

How is student work graded?

Your teachers grade, using a shared rubric we provide: process, verification, craft, and presentation. We supply the evidence records.
