AI Literacy Curriculum for Middle School
Digital Alchemy's AI literacy curriculum for middle school moves students from treating AI output as magic to treating it as something built by people, that can be tested and questioned. It runs as a guided 9-week pilot: literacy and safety first, then a first real build students present at the end.
Taught by Desi Baker (Desmond Baker Jr), a Google Gemini Certified Educator who has taught AI through the Chicago Housing Authority and spoken at AI Tinkerers.

- Middle school principals and STEM coordinators
- Teachers of technology, media, and advisory classes
- Districts building a bridge between elementary digital citizenship and high school AI coursework
What students walk away with
- Students explain how AI learns from data, in their own words
- Students check AI claims against reliable sources before trusting them
- Students follow classroom AI rules they helped create
- Every student completes a first guided build and presents it
The middle school arc
- Weeks 1 to 3: what AI is, training data, predictions, and where AI makes mistakes
- Weeks 4 to 6: bias, privacy, misinformation checks, and class AI rules
- Weeks 7 to 9: a guided build, a game, story, or simple app, tested and presented
The honest comparison
Free middle school curricula from Code.org and Day of AI are strong, and many schools run them well with their own staff. This pilot is for schools that want the same ground covered with an instructor in the room, teacher training included, and a showcase that proves what students made.
Safety, built for this age
- School-approved, supervised tools only, no open chatbots for students
- No student accounts on consumer AI services
- Privacy and image safety taught explicitly, including deepfakes and consent
Price

Is this too advanced for sixth graders?
No. The literacy weeks start concrete: sorting, patterns, and predictions students can see. The build is guided step by step.
Does it fit a quarter schedule?
Yes. The 9-week arc is built to fit a quarter, a trimester unit, or an after-school cycle.
What do parents get told?
We provide a one-page family summary: what students will use, what they will not use, and how privacy is handled. Schools send it in their own name.
